MUSHIN MAKEOVER: HISTORY IS MADE!
It was probably the most anticipated nation building project of 2009.
It started as a simple God idea that came to Fela Durotoye sometime in October. It was at a Change Summit in Mushin. "God told me that MUSHIN is the place for Making Unique Stars and Heroes In Nigeria", said Fela Durotoye, the initiator of the project. He said at the meeting, he shared the idea of painting houses in the area, and "the whole place caught fire". The rest, as they say, is history.
But the real history was made on December 12, 2009. That Saturday, thousands of people from within and around Lagos, Nigeria and the Diaspora trooped out to Mushin Local Government in Lagos State for the Mushin Makeover Project.
That morning, as thousands of participants were getting ready for an arduos task, the heavens opened to signal its approval for the event with a downpour that lasted for a little over forty minutes.
No one was deterred by the downpour. Not even Her Excellency, the First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs Abimbola Fashola who was on hand earlier than others to flag off the first-of-its-kind nation building project that is sure to spin off several others in weeks and months to come.
In total, 291 houses were successfully painted within the eight hours allotted time. Road side curbs on Agege Motor Road, roundabouts, street pillars and walls were also not spared by the paint brushes of the excited voulnteers numbering over two thousand.
Just like most of the participants, the visionary, Fela Durotoye could not hide his joy. "This is the day when we all decide to take collective responsibility for our nation, when our little individual efforts make significant collective impact".
He was speaking the mind of the participants, including the several A-list celebrities that took part in the event. From Segun Arinze, Banky W, to Frank Edoho; from Infinity to TY Bello; Foluke Daramola to Tara Fela-Durotoye; the feeling was the same as they painted the street of Mushin, their voices were united; "This is the first time this kind of thing is happening in my country and I am happy to be a part of it".
The landords and residents of Mushin, who were the beneficiaries, had astounding words to share. Their excitement and enthusiasm was palpable as they could not believe that their houses were being painted at no cost to them.
Many of them expressed joy over the initiative, describing it as the first time they are witnessing such. One of the landlords, Alhaji Olayiwola of 62, Ogunmokun Road described it as a very laudable project. According to him, “I have lived in Mushin for more than 50 years and this has never happened before and infact as far as I know, it has not happened anywhere in Nigeria”.
Rashidat Modupe is a student who lives at 12, Ladipo Street. She said, “This is so cool. Our old house is looking new with fresh green painting. I stayed home all day to support the painters, I even cooked for them. I don’t know why our house was chosen on this street, we did not pay anybody. We got our house painted free of charge”.
A Civil servant, who simply identified himself as Roy, said “this is a wow initiative”. Roy who lives at 39, Ladipo Street, Mushin said “In the History of Nigeria, this has never happened before. I am elated, I am glad!”
All the Project Sponsors, (Stanbic IBTC Bank, Dulux Paints, Berger Paints, UBA Foundation, Wema Bank) and partners (Business Day, Superscreen, House of Tara, Magic Eye Photography, DMT Mobile Toilet) were all satisfied with the impact of the project.
And so, at about 8pm that Saturday, when Kelvin, one of the volunteers set out to his home in Festac Town, he gave his certificate of participation another look of admiration and then said out loud; "I don't know when this kind of thing will happen again, but I am glad I was a part of this one". |

…as nation building initiative gathers momentum
One of Nigeria’s strong banks, STANBIC IBTC, has joined the train of partners for the MUSHIN MAKEOVER project, as the hugely anticipated Mushin Makeover project gathers momentum.
The vibrant bank comes on board as project supporters of this first-of-its-kind unprecedented nation building project that will draw over 5,000 volunteers to paint houses on seven MUSHIN streets on Saturday, December 12, 2009.
The Project has continued to enjoy the support of individuals and corporate organisations across Nigeria, as one of the finest paint producers in Nigeria, BERGER PAINTS, are also partnering to train about 100 unemployed Mushin youths on the art of painting preparatory to the exercise.
Other corporate organisations that are a part of the Mushin Makeover Project in various supporting roles include Wema Bank, DMT Mobile Toilets, Magic Eye Photography, Nestle Foods, Ben TV, Hi TV, Superscreen and Business Day Newspapers.
The MUSHIN MAKEOVER Project has already received the endorsement of the Lagos State Governor, His Excellency, Babatunde Fashola, who described the initiative as “a most welcome development”. The First Lady of the State, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola will also be flagging off the event on Saturday, as she puts brush on the first building to be painted.
The project has also enjoyed tremendous support from the entertainment industry, with celebrities like Alibaba, Stella Damascus, Tee A, Kate Henshaw, Denrele Edun, Teju Babyface, DJ Jimmy Jatt, DJ Gosporella amongst others coming out to endorse the project openly at a well attended Celebrity Endorsement/World Press Conference held recently.
The Mushin Makeover holds on Saturday December 12 on seven streets in Mushin Local Government namely; Agege Motor Road, Ogunmokun Road, Palm Avenue, Olateju Road, Olanibi/Ojekunle Street, Ladipo Street and Isolo Road. Houses will be painted simultaneously on these streets over a period of eight hours NON-STOP! |

Visible Impact to give Mushin facelift
…as Fashola, celebrities endorse nation-building initiative
On Saturday December 12, 2009, over 5,000 volunteers from the city of Lagos and the entire nation will converge on the Mushin Local Government of Lagos State to paint seven selected streets in the area, in an unprecedented community development initiative of the GEMSTONE Nigeria project (under the auspices of Visible Impact) which intends to bring about a physical beautification of the area.
The initiative tagged ‘MUSHIN MAKEOVER’ is a one day exercise that specifically involves painting of houses and roadside curbs, as well as structures along the most noticeable and eye-catching parts of the selected city location, over a duration of 8 hours, NON-STOP!
The visionary, Fela Durotoye, says the initiative’s ultimate objective “is to actualize the G.E.M.S.T.O.N.E Nigeria vision which is to raise a Generation that is Empowered, Motivated and Stirred to Operate with Natural Excellence”. This Generation, he affirms, “will build Nigeria into the world’s most desirable nation to live in by 2025”.
Durotoye who is widely regarded as Nigeria’s most sought after speaker and nation builder, strongly believes that M.U.S.H.I.N is the place for Making Unique Stars and Heroes in Nigeria, and with this project, the multi-award winning management consultant intends to inspire more people to believe that they can “make a positive change in their environment and that we (the people); are the government we have been waiting for”.
Already, there have been overwhelming endorsements for this nation building project, including that of the Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN).
In his words, the project “is a most welcome development”. The first lady of the State, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola has not only endorsed the project; she will be there in person to flag-off the event.

Meanwhile, Sound Sultan, Infinity and Wande Coal will be performing at the mini-rally to bring the event to a climax.
The Volunteer list has continued to soar (both online and offline) with huge traffic on the gemstone website (www.gemstone2025.org) with people donating buckets of paint, brushes and actual manpower on D-day.
More donors from the private sector, especially producers of paint are still welcome to make this project a resounding success.
A joint force of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the so called area boys, as well as volunteers will assist in controlling traffic around Mushin during the program.
Huge waste bins will also be provided at major street corners by the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to ensure proper waste disposal after the program with the assistance of Medical Youth Corps members within the Mushin local government will be on hand to provide medical services along with other para-medical agencies including the Nigerian Red Cross Society.
There will also be food partners on ground to provide refreshment during this energy demanding event.
The Mushin MakeOver is a nation building initiative of VISIBLE IMPACT, an organization that manages transformational change for people, corporates and nations.
The project is in conjunction with the Mushin Local Government, DN Meyer paints, Fidelity Bank, BEN TV, Hi TV and Business Day.
